Caladenia uliginosa - Darting Spider Orchids

This group contains 3 subspecies. Plants are similar in shape to White Spider Orchids but have smaller flowers with greenish yellow petals and sepals. The Darting Spider Orchid, (C. uliginosa subsp. uliginosa has a red-tipped labellum, whereas the other two sub species do not.

The Darting Spider Orchid is the 'normal' subspecies and is easily distinguished as it is the only subspecies that has a red-tipped labellum. It is found in winter wet areas and along creek lines. Its distribution is along the western edge of the wheatbelt between Perth and Albany.

The Northern Darting Spider Orchid is much the same as the Darting Spider Orchid, the only difference is the lack of a red-tipped labellum. It is found mainly in the northern part of the distribution of the Darting Spider Orchid (hence its common name). It inhabits similar habitat, winter wet flats and creeklines.

The Frail Spider Orchid is much the same as the Northern Darting Spider Orchid, differing in having larger flowers and being found in well drained soils, rather than winter wet areas.
