There are five main configurations of Bibbulmun Track huts.
Type 1A (Standard). These huts feature four bunks, a short overhanging roof on the front with outward sloping ends of the side walls to meet the roof. A narrow table and benches is located between the bunks. Most of these huts have been rebuilt into Type 2 huts. Ball Creek is now the sole remaining Type 1A hut.
Type 1B (Stretch) These huts are much the same as Type 1A, differing in being wider, with wider bunks and having straight sides on the front edge of the side walls. Most of these huts have also been rebuilt into Type 2 huts. Hewitt's Hill is now the sole remaining Type 1B hut.
Type 2 (Deep South) These huts feature a large verandah on the front with one or two tables under the verandah. There is a large sleeping platform that stretches the entire width of the hut with two upper bunks on each side. Huts that were built as Type 2 have a much steeper roof pitch than huts that have been rebuilt from Type 1.
Type 3 (Nornalup) These huts feature a single level sleeping platform that extends around two sides of the hut with one corner of the hut being open rather than one whole side being open. There is a table in the open corner of the hut, but there is no verandah. Older Type 3 huts are constructed from timber, while newer ones are constructed with rammed earth.
Type 4 (modified Deep South) These huts are the same as Type 2 differing in having a single upper bunk that stretches across the entire width of the hut. Currently, there is only two Typ3 4 huts: Helena and Waalegh.
Other types: There are a few huts that do not fit into these groups. One of them is Mt Wells, which is the old firetower warden's hut. The others are the three group huts. These huts are designed for larger groups. The shelter is larger, but is not particularly designed for sleeping, but rather for meeting and meals. The group huts have two toilets and more tent sites.
